About eHealth

The Australian Government’s National Health Reform aims to deliver a better deal for patients and secure the long-term sustainability of our health system.

The eHealth initiative is one of a number of initiatives being implemented under the National Health Reform. eHealth aims to improve the collection and sharing of health information such as medications, test results and hospital discharge results, by introducing electronic services to improve upon existing paper based systems.

Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR)

The establishment of a Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR) system is a key component of the National Health Reform agenda.

The PCEHR system will allow better access to important health information held in dispersed records across the country. It is about providing a system that links the right information about the right person and presents it at the right place.

Individuals who choose to participate will be able to see their important health information when and where they need it, and they will be able to share this information with trusted healthcare providers.

The main features of the PCEHR will be:

  • information from multiple healthcare providers will be available from a single location
  • it is an opt-in system so every Australian can choose if they want to have PCEHR created
  • patients must give permission before a Healthcare Provider can view or add to the PCEHR.

It is envisaged that a patient will also be able to access this information, however, this feature along with many other developments, will be developed progressively over the next ten years.
