Medview: A national medications repository

15 February 2012
Inner East Melbourne Medicare Local (IEMML) is working closely with the project lead, Fred IT Group, to develop a national medications repository called MedView.

As part of the Australian Government’s National eHealth Program, this trial aims to improve patient health outcomes by providing a more complete basis for decision making and allowing for better communication between a patient’s care team.

MedView will enable registered IEMML doctors and pharmacists to view a combined list of prescribed and dispensed medications regardless of how many different doctors and pharmacies the patient has attended within the select region.

The benefits of MedView include:

  1. Free and easy access to a patient’s current list of medications information
  2. The ability to more effectively monitor patient’s medications regime compliance and limit adverse drug interactions
  3. Integrated with existing clinical software
  4. Uses eRx Script Exchange ePrescribing for the fast and secure transmission of information
  5. No cost to install or use.

MedView will provide a combined record of prescribed and dispensed medications for patients across community, hospital and aged care settings.

A critical component for eHealth is to register the practice with the Healthcare Identifiers Service and be allocated a HPI-O.

Since March 2011, the GP Network’s Practice Liaison Officers have been visiting practices and assisting them complete a number of required processes to ensure their businesses are eHealth ready. To date 51 practices have been successfully allocated their HPI-O and another 43 are in the process of completing the application process.

Is your Medical Software eHealth compliant?

3 August 2011
The use of the Healthcare Identifiers is the backbone of the eHealth system. It is therefore critical that Medical Software have the capacity to store and match a patient’s Individual Healthcare Identifier.

The providers of Medical Software are working to incorporate the required place holders to store the IHIs and these should become available over the next three months.
